The Search for The Perfect T-Shirt - This one is in my Top Three

I have been searching for the perfect black T-Shirt for some time & have recently tried to be more scientific about it. My goal is to find a replacement for the Marks & Spencer version which is 15 years old, has been died twice and of the three I bought only one does not have holes in. Clearly I am not a fan of disposable fashion, preferring to buy well, buy once. Sadly the world is changing.\n\nThe problem is that just because you pay a lot for a shirt, it does not necessarily mean it is a quality item. The experience of a friend, who spent decades working in the textile trade, with Superdry shirts is a case in point. His view was that it would cost pretty much the same to produce a quality shirt as one of poor quality. My aim is to spend my money on a quality item not a premium brand.\n\nIn writing this I accept that the question of what makes the perfect shirt is very subjective, but this is my review and my preference. I advise you to conduct your own research.\n\nStage One. I read many reviews and tried to understand what the general consensus was. “The wisdom of crowds.”\n\nStage Two. I ordered 12 shirts in Extra Large. Tried them on. Then, with the prior agreement of the supplier (who held all the brands I wanted in almost the right sizes & colours.) returned any that did not make it to round two for a refund at my cost. I chose the following trial sample of 12, all black men’s Extra Large:\n\n• Gildan Men's Ring Spun, Soft Style T-Shirt\n• Fruit of the Loom Men's Softspun T\n• B&C Exact 150 T-Shirt\n• Uneek Premium T-Shirt\n• SG Mens T-Shirt SG15\n• Anvil Fashion Tee\n• B&C Exact 190 T-Shirt\n• Russell Classic T-Shirt ZT180M\n• Russell Combed Cotton T-Shirt ZT215M\n• B&C Men-Fit T-Shirt\n• American Apparel Fine Jersey Short Sleeve T\n• Russell T-Shirt 010M\n\nResults: My observations were:\n\n• I am only an Extra Large in Gildan’s sizing regime, on which I based my size decision. \n• I am a Large - They all went back. Doh! (For clarity I am 6ft tall and medium build - probably slim, given the obesity now prolific in the developed nations of the world.)\n• It is possible to see a difference in quality &, at this stage at least, you do seem to get what you pay for.\n• Uneek Premium T-Shirt represented very good value for money and probably just missed out at number 4. Put them on your list.\n• Russell Combed Cotton T-Shirt ZT215M like all their shirts was very good quality but a little heavier than I wanted on reflection. It also had an unusual double layered shoulder design. Not in any way bad - just not what I wanted.\n• My final three were:\no American Apparel Unisex Fine Jersey Short Sleeve T-Shirt\no Russell Europe Super Ringspun T-shirt\no B and C Collection Exact 190 T-shirt\n\nStage Three. I have ordered two of each of these three patterns of shirt. I have worn one of each for one day.\n\nResults:\n\n• I am happy with my choice of size.\n• All are quite long, but not long enough for it to be an issue and would certainly tuck in to trousers well.\n• Russell Europe Super Ringspun T-shirt & B and C Collection Exact 190 T-shirt are both good quality. The only thing that lets them down is that on first wear the sleeves stick out slightly wear they are creased. This may reduce with washing and if I not fold or iron in the sleeve crease. This is probably overly critical.\n• American Apparel is spot on. The winner so far.\n\nStage Four. I now have to wash and wear for a good long time before I decide which to order in a larger quantity. That said, they may all do well and I might not need to replace then for some time.\n\nFootnote:\n\nSadly at time of writing American Apparel have just filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. See The Financial Times article here: http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/458bd4c6-6b5a-11e5-aca9-d87542bf8673.html#axzz3nzTsHRMC\n\nA sad day & shows that I am in the minority. Well that has never worried me before. May be one day the human race will work out that its planet’s resources are finite and fashion is a million miles from style and responsibility. My T-shirts & I will be long gone.
